Few topics are as controversially discussed among guinea pig owners as dry food.
Some say:
"Dry food has no place in their diet."
Others consider certain dry foods to be a sensible supplement.
And somewhere in between are many owners who simply want the best for their guinea pigs.
But before we discuss whether dry food is useful or not, a much more important question is worth asking:
🐹 What exactly is dry food?
If we take the term literally, dry food is first and foremost any food from which water has been removed.
This includes, for example:
-
Hay
-
dried herbs
-
flowers
-
leaves
-
seeds
-
roots
-
pellets
-
extrudates
All these feedstuffs are often grouped together under the term "dry food."
However, they sometimes differ considerably in their composition.
🌾 The most important dry food of all: Hay
Interestingly, almost all owners agree on one point:
Hay should always be available to guinea pigs.
This is also a dry food.
And one of the most important of all.
Hay supports natural feeding behavior, provides structure, and keeps the animals busy for many hours a day.

🌿 Not all dry food is created equal
Precisely for this reason, it is difficult to make sweeping statements about "dry food."
Dried herbs differ from pellets.
Seeds differ from flowers.
And hay, in turn, differs from everything else.
The crucial question is therefore often not:
Is dry food good or bad?
But:
Which feedstuff exactly are we talking about?
💛 What I have personally observed
Over the years, I have tried many different feedstuffs.
I have learned that guinea pigs have very individual preferences.
Some pounce on certain herbs.
Others love flowers.
Still others first look for their favorite seeds.
Therefore, I no longer view individual feedstuffs in isolation today, but as part of a varied diet.
🌱 Diversity instead of black-and-white thinking
For me, a balanced diet does not consist of a single feedstuff.
Much more important is the combination of:
-
high-quality hay
-
fresh plants
-
vegetables
-
herbs
-
flowers
-
suitable seeds

🦷 And what about their teeth?
It is often claimed that dry food is fundamentally bad for their teeth.
However, this cannot be considered in such a sweeping way.
It is crucial whether the animals receive sufficient structured food and can perform their natural grinding movements.
Hay plays a particularly important role in this.

💚 My conclusion
When dry food is discussed, people often talk about completely different feedstuffs.
Therefore, I rarely find sweeping statements helpful.
For me, the overall diet is what matters most.
Fresh hay, varied plant-based food, and carefully composed feeding form the basis.
And in the end, our guinea pigs often show us quite clearly themselves what they particularly like.
