If someone asks me what the most important food for guinea pigs is, my answer is always:
Hay.
Not herbs. Not vegetables. Not treats.
Hay.
Because hay accompanies our guinea pigs around the clock. It's in their enclosure in the morning when the first furry noses wake up. They nibble on it, dig through it, and use it as a cozy favorite spot throughout the day. And often, in the evening, the guinea pigs are still sitting together in the hay, enjoying the last quiet moments of the day.
🐹 Hay is the basis of their diet
Guinea pigs are designed to consume small amounts of food over many hours a day.
Hay primarily provides fiber-rich roughage. This supports normal digestion and ensures that the animals chew for extended periods. Precisely this sustained chewing is important for natural tooth abrasion.
Therefore, high-quality hay should always be available in unlimited quantities.
