A look into the food bowl – and into the Andes. 🌿
When we think of guinea pigs, we usually picture cute furry friends happily scurrying through their enclosure or contentedly nibbling on a hay pile. But did you know where their roots lie?
Our domestic guinea pigs today originally come from South America – more precisely, from the Andean regions of Peru and neighboring countries. There, their wild ancestors lived in an environment with a great diversity of grasses, herbs, leaves, and other plant components.
This natural diversity provided them with everything they needed to live: different nutrients, minerals, vitamins, and many valuable plant compounds. 🌾
You can also find out which feeds are particularly suitable for guinea pigs today in our article [20 healthy foods for guinea pigs – hay, herbs, flowers & vegetables for a natural diet].
Today, our guinea pigs no longer live in the Andes, but with us at home. This makes it all the more important to offer them a varied and balanced diet that comes as close as possible to their natural needs.
💚 Why nutrition is so important
Guinea pigs are among the few animal species that cannot produce their own vitamin C. Therefore, they must absorb this vital vitamin daily through their food.
Depending on age, life situation, and individual needs, the vitamin C requirement can vary. A varied diet with fresh plant components helps to provide the animals with good care.
But don't worry: you don't have to be a nutrition expert to feed your guinea pigs well. With a little knowledge, attention, and a good dose of love, a lot can already be done right. 😊
Over the years, I have noticed that there are many different opinions about nutrition. How I personally deal with this topic and why I consider experience and observation to be so important is described in the article [Between science, experience & the internet].
🌱 This is what a varied diet can look like
Many owners rely on a combination of different food components:
✅ [Fresh hay – available around the clock]
✅ Green fodder like leaves, herbs, and wild plants
✅ Various types of vegetables
✅ Small amounts of fruit as a supplement
✅ Twigs for nibbling
✅ Fresh or dried herbs
✅ Seeds as a supplement
Variety often makes the difference. Different plants provide different nutrients and at the same time ensure variety in the diet.
🌿 A word on dried herbs
Dried herbs are part of a varied diet for me.
I personally offer my animals a small amount about twice a week. This way, they naturally supplement their diet and add extra variety to their food bowl.
Many owners use dried herbs as a supplement to fresh feeding. This allows the animals to choose from various plant components and customize their diet.
💛 My personal tip:
I like to provide my guinea pigs with both fresh and dried herbs. It's always exciting to observe what they are particularly in the mood for at the moment.
🌾 A word on seeds
Seeds are also part of a varied diet for many owners.
Among other things, they contain fats, proteins, and various minerals and can – offered in appropriate quantities – be an interesting addition to the diet.
Wild relatives of our guinea pigs also consume various seeds and plant seeds depending on their habitat.
Therefore, I have decided to also offer seed mixes that I use myself with my animals and that have proven successful in my keeping.
🐹 What I've learned over the years
Over the years, I have read a lot, tried things out, and constantly adjusted my feeding practices.
Above all, I learned one thing:
Every group is a little different.
What some guinea pigs love, others might only sniff briefly. Some immediately pounce on certain herbs, while others have completely different preferences.
This is particularly evident in [Group housing for guinea pigs – why companionship is so important], because each animal brings its own character and preferences.
That's exactly why it's so much fun to observe the animals and make their diet varied.
I am happy to share the experiences I have gained with other owners – because I know how many questions can arise, especially at the beginning.
💛 Good nutrition starts with variety
Of course, many factors influence the well-being of our guinea pigs.
For me, however, a varied diet is one of the most important foundations of species-appropriate husbandry.
With fresh hay, various herbs, vegetables, suitable seeds, and a good portion of attention, much can already be done for the well-being of the animals.
Dental health also benefits from a diet that matches the animals' natural feeding behavior. You can find out more about this here:

And the best part?
You are rewarded anew every day when the guinea pigs curiously run to the feeding place, enthusiastically browse in the hay, and pick out their favorite herbs. 🐹🌿
